Alright I went a completely different direction this month and made an old fashioned "mix tape", the kind you'd give to the girl you liked in school. So if you're lookin' for the usual, you might want to skip this month, but if you're open to a slow and beautiful journey through classic soul, 80's slow jams, acoustic tracks and lots of piano with some of the best voices across several genres (RIP Amy Winehouse), then this rare mix is for you. Yup, 2 months worth of mixes done in one weekend (one day actually). I was on a roll and although Lexie made it a little difficult to record the June mix (have you ever tried to make mix with a 3 year old under foot asking a million questions, almost turning off your power bar and the kicker...needing you to help her go pee!) the girls were asleep for the night when I dragged myself out of their bed (I'd fallen asleep too) powered up the CDJs again and knocked out the July "all soulful house" mix. In my humble opinion, this mix is a monster (but I think that about every house mix I make). There's been tracks waiting since January for this mix so there was a big pool of tracks to choose from for my annual summer house mix - translation, nothing but the best of the best, no filler here my friends! (there were plenty of "good" tracks that didn't make the cut for this one). Don't let the first couple tracks fool you though, I may start off mellow, but that's just warming you up and easing you into what lies ahead. Yup, still from the same night at Proof back in March (but I promise you for June I'm gonna be making "Back in the day when I was a teenager pt 2" and July is gonna be a studio house mix that I can't wait to make!) So this is part one from the night, when I first started far too early in the night before most had even arrived...pure lounge vibe with lots of re-edits near the end. As for the artwork this month, it's an old pic of Lola (my beautiful daughter who does my mix intro) diggin' in the crates. (if you've been a follower for a while you'll remember I used this one for Soul Shack party flyer back in the early days) With all the re-edits on the second half of this mix I felt there was a bit of a tie in (but also, Lola just got her tonsils out today and as we were leaving the hospital with her, my wife and I were remembering back to when we left the hospital for the very first time with our baby Lola, so I'm a little nostalgic...they grow up so fast! P.S. I just had to mention this, "Glow" by Rick James is included in this mix and it get's Lola's "seal of approval" as she described the song as quote "delicious" when she first heard it, I love that little girl!

Alright, I'm not sure if I'm 100% happy with the actual mixing on this one (I...wait for it...have a bit of vocal overlapping!!!) but I guess I have to come to accept the fact that if I'm going to make Soul Shack mixes at home (not live) I'm going to have to contend with distractions from my daughters which will obviously effect the mixes. So please overlook the vocal overlap and a couple other forced mixes (I was rushed to record the mix during Lexie's nap with Lola underfoot so there's no way I've got time to record it again) and just enjoy the selections...MY FAVOURITE SOULFUL HOUSE TRACKS OF 2010!!! Yup, January is the time to reflect back on the past year and see which tracks I was feeling the most. A lot of the usual suspects (DJ Spinna, Rocco, Black Coffee, Peven Everett, Osunlade, Jason B, Guy Robin (way to bring back the classic disco sound!)...my boy Cubanixx who did a wicked job doing an update on Shannon's freestyle classic "Give Me Tonight" and even the Jamiroquai track starting it off which some might argue isn't house, but it's got a house vibe and tempo and I was loving the long overdue return of Jamiroquai (even if the rest of the album was a bit of a disappointment) so I had to include it. Also have to give special mention to Dolls Combers who made quite possibly one of the most beautiful tracks of 2010 and Atjazz who end off the mix, I wanted to add more of their stuff, but didn't have room. Alright, first off, Merry Christmas!!! I hope everyone is enjoying some time off with friends and family. This month I keep it smooth and sort of bossa nova / samba / latin-vibed to make you think warm 'tropical' thoughts while it's cold and winter outside (well, at least up here its cold!) Hopefully it will make a good soundtrack to staying in and entertaining over the holidays (or even just while you're cozied up enjoying a nice cortadito).

This mix was inspired by a November trip to Mexico City to visit good friends and I didn't know when I'd actually get a chance to record it, but as luck would have it, I got to record it during cocktails at a wedding I dj'd the other weekend (Hope Hawaii is treating you well Michelle!), so it was made in time for the December Soul Shack mix! (at some point part 2 "Horchata en Polanco" will get made too, so stay tuned for that one...and if you're in Mexico you've gotta try Horchata, my favourite drink in the world!!!)

Yup, that's right, it was 5 years ago in November 2005 that I posted the first ever Soul Shack mix (back then it was on Soulstream Networks) So for something this special I figured a proper studio mix was in order (translation, no cop-out live recording this time). As has always been the case for November, it's a little different and more party vibed than lounge vibe...this year I even included...wait for it, Drake & Bruno Mars! Yup, there's mainstream top 40 on a Soul Shack mix (but in my defence it's the Tropical Blendz rmx of Drake and I just have to say it, the Bruno Mars song has restored my faith in new urban music with an actual positive message...plus my daughters love it and it makes me think of them.) And while I'm talking about my girls, this morning when I checked out this mix with them in the car and the Mark Ronson song came on Lola asked "is this the playlist?" (she's got her own playlist on my iPod) - I thought she was complaining that I wasn't playing her playlist, but she LIKED the track and wanted to ADD it to the playlist, NICE! Then after I dropped Lola off at school and Red Room came on, Lexie started bouncing her feet in the car seat and told me "I like this song daddy!"...so this mix comes Lola & Lexie approved! And because it's the 5 Year Anniversary, I've done something I've never done before...I'm posting this mix at 192kbps so enjoy the quality!

Man, I should have thrown some Trinere on there!)

Another Soul Shack mix, another hotel lobby bar recording! This month it's from Avenue Lounge here at home in Toronto, recorded live during TIFF 2010 earlier this month. I ended up playing 7 nights at Avenue for TIFF and the first weekend the celebrities were in the house! Clint Eastwood, Mat Damon, Kevin Spacey, Woody Harrelson, Josh Brolin, Josh Hartnett, Zach Galifianakis, Paul Giamati, Peter Fonda, David Blaine... Avenue was definitely happening this year!

This particular recording was starting the night off on Saturday (which ended up going until 5am!) and was made with friends of mine in mind, as they moved to Mexico at the end of the summer and a lot of these tracks were the soundtrack to hanging out by their pool...so this one's for you guys, download and enjoy it down in Mexico City!
