Here it is, the first half of the birthday edition of the Soul Shack party that went down at Sutra on April 28th (my actual birthday). The night was a purely self-indulgent playlist of personal selections (101 to be exact, or 100 + an accapella)...basically me playing for myself making a mix, but doing it live at a bar. (but that's really what the Soul Shack is all about!)

Although June is normally a hip hop mix and July a summer house mix, I think for continuity I'm going to push things back a month and June will be part 2 of the party, but for now, here's the playlist for part 1 (48 tracks and almost 2 hours), enjoy!

Here it is, just in time for Miami (and inspired by Miami), "Poolside Grooves" Pt. I. I was originally only planning on making one 'promo' mix based on that sort of groove that would go perfectly at a pool party...however as I started to put the list together of stuff I wanted to include, it was WAY bigger than just one mix - so I made 3! (and all in one weekend!) Part 1 is more urban, rn'b, old school and re-edits in terms of genre (part 2 is more nu disco / chill wave and part 3 is soulful house). Alright, I'd apologize for being late...but it was your fault! Too many people downloading my mixes made me go over my bandwidth so I was physically unable to upload a new mix until now (Christmas came late and they reset my bandwidth so I'm gonna upload this, October & November tonight). Alright I went a completely different direction this month and made an old fashioned "mix tape", the kind you'd give to the girl you liked in school. So if you're lookin' for the usual, you might want to skip this month, but if you're open to a slow and beautiful journey through classic soul, 80's slow jams, acoustic tracks and lots of piano with some of the best voices across several genres (RIP Amy Winehouse), then this rare mix is for you. It's even like an old mixtape in the sense that it clocks in at around 90 minutes, not the usual 80 min CD length (sorry if you planned on burning this mix to CD).

Yup, 2 months worth of mixes done in one weekend (one day actually). I was on a roll and although Lexie made it a little difficult to record the June mix (have you ever tried to make mix with a 3 year old under foot asking a million questions, almost turning off your power bar and the kicker...needing you to help her go pee!) the girls were asleep for the night when I dragged myself out of their bed (I'd fallen asleep too) powered up the CDJs again and knocked out the July "all soulful house" mix. In my humble opinion, this mix is a monster (but I think that about every house mix I make). There's been tracks waiting since January for this mix so there was a big pool of tracks to choose from for my annual summer house mix - translation, nothing but the best of the best, no filler here my friends! (there were plenty of "good" tracks that didn't make the cut for this one). Don't let the first couple tracks fool you though, I may start off mellow, but that's just warming you up and easing you into what lies ahead. Alright, first off, Merry Christmas!!! I hope everyone is enjoying some time off with friends and family. This month I keep it smooth and sort of bossa nova / samba / latin-vibed to make you think warm 'tropical' thoughts while it's cold and winter outside (well, at least up here its cold!) Hopefully it will make a good soundtrack to staying in and entertaining over the holidays (or even just while you're cozied up enjoying a nice cortadito).

This mix was inspired by a November trip to Mexico City to visit good friends and I didn't know when I'd actually get a chance to record it, but as luck would have it, I got to record it during cocktails at a wedding I dj'd the other weekend (Hope Hawaii is treating you well Michelle!), so it was made in time for the December Soul Shack mix! (at some point part 2 "Horchata en Polanco" will get made too, so stay tuned for that one...and if you're in Mexico you've gotta try Horchata, my favourite drink in the world!!!)

Yup, that's right, it was 5 years ago in November 2005 that I posted the first ever Soul Shack mix (back then it was on Soulstream Networks) So for something this special I figured a proper studio mix was in order (translation, no cop-out live recording this time). As has always been the case for November, it's a little different and more party vibed than lounge vibe...this year I even included...wait for it, Drake & Bruno Mars! Yup, there's mainstream top 40 on a Soul Shack mix (but in my defence it's the Tropical Blendz rmx of Drake and I just have to say it, the Bruno Mars song has restored my faith in new urban music with an actual positive message...plus my daughters love it and it makes me think of them.) And while I'm talking about my girls, this morning when I checked out this mix with them in the car and the Mark Ronson song came on Lola asked "is this the playlist?" (she's got her own playlist on my iPod) - I thought she was complaining that I wasn't playing her playlist, but she LIKED the track and wanted to ADD it to the playlist, NICE! Then after I dropped Lola off at school and Red Room came on, Lexie started bouncing her feet in the car seat and told me "I like this song daddy!"...so this mix comes Lola & Lexie approved! And because it's the 5 Year Anniversary, I've done something I've never done before...I'm posting this mix at 192kbps so enjoy the quality!
