And with this post...I'm current! It's May, and I'm posting the May mix, all caught back up! This one was recorded at the South Beach Adidas Originals store during WMC, but like all of the Adidas mixes before (I can't believe I've been djing there for 6 years) its pure eclectic Soul Shack vibes, not just house, I really like this one, perfect for the long weekend. A dj friend of mine called me the other day telling me that he came across one of my Adidas 2009 mixes and had been listening to it non-stop for the past couple of days, saying it was perfect for the warm spring weather - that's my hope/goal when I record a mix, for it to be timeless and perfect for listening to in the car or at home or on the go...time will tell if in 5 years this latest Adidas mix stands the test of time or not, I think it will.

So time will tell if this becomes a new annual tradition. In 2012, to be honest, I think I liked nu-disco/daytime disco/chillwave (whatever you want to call it) better than soulful house. So much so that after I'd made my "favourite soulful house of 2012 mix, I felt I needed to do the same, but for the rest of the stuff that I was really feeling...so here you go, the first ever Soul Shack favourite NON-house selections mix! Sorry for the delay in posting, I missed the March window and in February I was posting the December & January mixes (I'll get caught up at some point lol!). Next up will be my WMC Promo (that I'll be posting right after this one) and then I'll let you guys decide what I should post next for the April mix; you've got 3 options from Miami 1) soulful house mix from the Mi Casa party at the Vagabond, 2) eclectic Soul Shack mix from Adidas or 3) boogie mix from Segafredo. Better late than never...I just recorded this this morning and I was a little distracted with Lola & Lexie playing in the same room so please overlook any imperfections lol! To be honest, it was a weird year for house, I didn't really stay on top of it all year (leaning more towards the daytime disco sound) so some of these tracks I only discovered when going over other best of 2012 lists. The mix is actually a modified July Soul Shack mix that never got recorded. Here's hoping 2013 is a better year for soulful house for me, although 2012 did show promise with a return to having some more soulful sounds with lush instrumentation instead of just more of the same repetitive 'tracks' or cookie cutter deep house jumping on the 'south african' sound. (or maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy). That's not saying there's not some of that great South African sound in this mix, but you know what I'm saying.

Here it is, just in time for Miami (and inspired by Miami), "Poolside Grooves" Pt. I. I was originally only planning on making one 'promo' mix based on that sort of groove that would go perfectly at a pool party...however as I started to put the list together of stuff I wanted to include, it was WAY bigger than just one mix - so I made 3! (and all in one weekend!) Part 1 is more urban, rn'b, old school and re-edits in terms of genre (part 2 is more nu disco / chill wave and part 3 is soulful house). Alright I went a completely different direction this month and made an old fashioned "mix tape", the kind you'd give to the girl you liked in school. So if you're lookin' for the usual, you might want to skip this month, but if you're open to a slow and beautiful journey through classic soul, 80's slow jams, acoustic tracks and lots of piano with some of the best voices across several genres (RIP Amy Winehouse), then this rare mix is for you.
