Episode 223: The Soul Shack (May 2025) Live @ Mansion House (May 23, 2025) The Soul Shack (May 2025) Live @ Mansion House (May 23, 2025) 223 17 full As much as I'm sitting on a pile of recordings to use for Soul Shack episodes, after I finished my set Friday night at Mansion, I was like "I should use this as a Soul Shack Mix". It's quite the musical journey - Beginning of the night is always just for me, and this time it involved the new Little Simz track Free, a small set of jungle remixes and of course at least one Sade track for the head bouncer, but then I went into (my version of) party mode, doing my best to rock the party, but with a mature Soul Shack influence, and trying to avoid most of the super cheesy and cliche sing along stuff (there's still a little bit though) and then finished off with a few classic house tracks. It's a live recording from my monthly at Clockwork, but this was the day after djing a set at Alvaro G's "Forty Nine" party, where I wanted to keep playing proper house music... so that's exactly what I did the next day at Clockwork! While recording, I had 2 people come up to compliment the music. When I asked if they were visiting or local, they were both locals, and when I asked a follow up, I already knew the answer - "did you used to go to Roxy Blu?", and of course they both said yes. So if you want to hear my personal taste in house music (heavily weighted with classics from the late 90's/early 00's), hit play now!

A year later Ontario is going into our latest 4 week lockdown and I'm getting nostalgic again, but this time for the hip hop from my twenties. There will be a second "street" edition, but part one here is (for lack of a better word) more of the "backpack" stuff. Still boom bap, but not the street, club or radio stuff... this is the jazz sampling more underground stuff. I had to put #Dilla on the artwork because his productions are all over this mix! Hope you enjoy!

It seems like a lifetime ago that I finally made it out to LA and did the first west coast edition of The Soul Shack! There should have already been a second LA Edition in the books by now, but Corona Virus sort of killed those travel plans (along with the last few months of my winter Miami residency :-( So until life gets back to normal and I can make it back out west, here's the recording from a cool & foggy evening on the rooftop of the Freehand Hotel LA (Broken Shaker) back on January 24th. This was my first time playing out west and it definitely influenced some of the music selection - let me know if you pick up on any of the west coast vibes ;-)
